EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
