A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
